The town of Wakefield contains seven villages: Wakefield Corner; Sanbornville; Union Village; Woodman; East, North, and South Wakefield. Some of these places hardly exist anymore, except as roadside signposts. The Hay Scale stands in Wakefield Corner, where once the Sealer of Weights and
Measures weighed wagons of hay bound for market, determining the market value of each load. Walk past the Congregational Church, the Parsonage, the old Post Office, the Inn and the old Schoolhouse where every one of these buildings has a story. Turntable Park in Sanbornville is a visual reminder of the trains that once connected this New England village to the rest of the world. The winding roads of North and South Wakefield and Woodman offer opportunities for antique hunting. ET Hines Mercantile features unique items for the past and present. In season the Farmers’ Market can be enjoyed on Saturdays. Other seasonal activities include May’s Pride Day activities; performances at the Opera House; August’s Heritage Day; as well as the Fireman’s, Church and Grange suppers. Enjoy meals ranging from Poor Peoples Pub grub to the fine dining at the Wakefield Inn. Then, there are various biking routes awaiting exploration. Other popular attractions include the dozen lakes and ponds that feature outdoor activities year round. 603.522.6106, www.wakefieldnh.org
