Danica Hand Dipped Candles Just over the Rockland line in West Rockport, find Danica Candles in its distinctive Scandinavian-style building. The scent of wax wafts through the air as candles are dipped repeatedly in an unpretentious factory behind the store. Erick Laustsen interned in his family’s candle factory north of Copenhagen and, like his ancestors, he vows to remain true to the Danish tradition of dipping tapered candles. Each year co-owners Cindy and Erik Laustsen and their staff dip more than a million candles, a staggering figure since it takes almost 2 days to produce a full-sized candle. The process begins with the creation of signature dyes, weighed to the hundredth of a gram, to produce custom colors. The dyes are then mixed with a paraffin-based beeswax and micro-crystalline waxes. Danica candles are dipped in vats of hot wax 50 to 60 times from first dip to completion then packaged, labeled and shipped. Tapers, pillars, votives and jar candles are offered in more than 40 colors and in scents ranging from peppermint twist to hot apple pie. Near the intersection of 17 on Route 90, West Rockport, 207.236.3060 www.danicacandles.com
