Maine Discovery Center  Newly constructed and fully staffed by the Penobscot Bay Chamber of Commerce, the center offers everything from brochures to barnacles (and public restrooms, too). Collaborative partners display educational videos and interactive exhibits. An etched map of the coast of Maine with indicators for every lighthouse in the state welcomes visitors at the entrance.  The Maine Lighthouse Museum and Lighthouse Depot gift shop are also here.

Maine Lighthouse Museum  Located within the Maine Discovery Center, this museum, new in 2006, is home to the largest collection of lighthouse lenses in the country and a landmark collection of lighthouse artifacts and Coast Guard memorabilia. Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth Center The Farnsworth Art Museum houses more than 13,000 paintings, sculptures, watercolors and fine art objects in twelve galleries and two historic properties on a three-acre campus. The permanent collection, Maine in America, explores landscapes, portraits and historic paintings by 19th century artists Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, George Inness, Fitz Hugh Lane, Gilbert Stuart and Thomas Sully.  The Wyeth Center showcases works from 3 generations of Wyeths,  offering a matchless collection of original artwork and archival materials from this First Family of American Art.  The Farnsworth Homestead, also owned by the Farnsworth Museum, takes visitors back to the Victorian era to witness the life of the affluent Farnsworth family in Rockland.

The Strand Theater  The historic movie theater on Main Street was updated in 2004-5 with state-of-the-art sound and projection equipment, interior and exterior restoration and the addition of a new, lighted marquee. Owls Head Transportation Museum  Planes, trains and automobiles are the focus of this museum located in nearby Owls Head.  Look for a spaceship or two, along with many interactive displays chronicling the history of transportation.  Don’t miss the superb replica of the Wright Brothers’ Flyer and the antique bicycle and motorcycle display, too.  Events include fly-ins and auto auctions, and the gift shop offers one-of-a-kind gifts, models and more.  Rt 73 in Owls Head, ME, 207.594.4418, www.owlshead.org

Lincoln Street Center for Art & Education   The 300-seat auditorium hosts plays, performances and poetry readings throughout the year. Highlights diverse artwork from local and national artists.  24 Lincoln St, 207.594.6490, www.lincolnstreetcenter.org

Island Institute 
The non profit has helped sustain Maine’s islands and working waterfront communities for more than 20 years.  Offering educational and developmental opportunities, the Institute helps to support environmental stewardship.
