National Education for Assistance Dog Service NEADS is a non-profit organization established in 1976 to train and provide rescued dogs and puppies to assist people who are deaf or physically disabled. It is the oldest continuing hearing dog program in the country and the only program of its kind in New England. Since its inception it has trained nearly 1000 assistance dog teams from all 50 states. Most hearing dogs are rescued from animal shelters and are typically small breed animals. Most service dogs are donated as puppies by breeders throughout the country and consist mostly of Golden or Labrador retrievers. However, many other breeds are also suitable. In 1998 NEADS began the Prison PUP Partnership where inmates foster and train service dog puppies for one year before the dogs return to the NEADS campus for advanced training and partnership with their new owner. Volunteer puppy raisers raise dogs in their homes for one year under the supervision of coordinators who set the program for the puppy’s care and training. www.neads.org |
