Some adventurers are rarely satisfied when their feet are on solid ground, so they take up rock climbing, never feeling more alive than when they’re dangling from a rope off the face of a cliff. Sky above them, sky behind them, sky under them… one thin rope, malleable climbing shoes, dance-like movements and determination propel them upwards. And then there are some adventurers who find even rock climbing a little tame. These athletes opt for the even more obscure sport of ice climbing. Take rock climbing’s ingredients and stir in the unique elements of frozen waterfalls, stiff boots with crampons, ice picks and constantly changing conditions—but don’t forget that ice only forms when the temperature is freezing. You dare not forget the extra gloves. The Mount Washington Valley offers some of the best icefall climbing in the North America. Classes, guided excursions, festivals, and camaraderie abound.
