Eagle Mountain House, New Hampshire
Eagle Mountain House
Visitors to today’s Eagle Mountain House, set 200 feet above the town of Jackson, NH, and overlooking the nationally-protected Wildcat River, join thousands of guests who, for more than 125 years, have counted on the resort for “hearty fare, cordial hospitality and wholesome recreational activities for the entire family.”
Opened by the Gale family as a 12-guest hostelry in 1879, the hotel quickly grew to accommodate 125 guests, including photographer Clifton Church. Throughout its history, the hotel has catered to the tastes of guests who enjoy the outdoors; hiking, showshoeing, sledding and trout fishing number among its timeless entertainments. White Mountain attractions, including downhill and cross country skiing, Storyland, the Cog Railway and outlet shopping are nearby.     In 1931, despite the Depression, the owners transformed the pasture and farm land in front of the inn into a 9-hole golf course, reputed to be among the most beautiful in New England.  The Eagle Mountain House broke new ground more figuratively when, in 1937, Austrian Beno Rybizka led the Mount Washington Valley’s first organized skiing on the 9th hole of this same course.  Perhaps because of its openness to innovation, Eagle Mountain House was one of the few hotels in the White Mountains to not only survive, but thrive, during the economic hard times pre-World War II.
Since 1986, rooms and suites have been owned privately and managed as a not-for-profit by the association owners; they are determined to return the inn to “its rightful place as the best year-round grand hotel in New Hampshire.”  Their commitment to keeping up with the times–wireless Internet is available throughout the complex, “Gas Aid” specials were offered when oil prices soared last summer–while maintaining the traditions of a grand hotel, invites guests for a comfortable and relaxing stay at the Eagle Mountain House.
