Bryant F. Tolles, Jr. is Professor Emeritus of History and Art History at the University of Delaware.  This article is adapted from his 1998 book, The Grand Resort Hotels of the White Mountains:  A Vanishing Architectural Legacy by David R. Godine, Publisher.   Previous works include Summer Cottages in the White Mountains:  The Architecture of Leisure and Recreation, 1870-1930 and Resort Hotels of the Adirondacks:  The Architecture of a Summer Paradise, 1850-1950.  He is presently working on a book on the grand hotels of the New England coast before 1950.  Dr. Tolles and his wife divide their time between Newark, Delaware and Sandwich, NH.
