NANTUCKET‚S VERANDA HOUSE UNVEILS FRESH LOOK UNIQUE TO THE ISLAND AS IT WELCOMES GUESTS FOR ITS 127TH SEASON Boston-based Interior Designer Rachel Reider Merges History and Modernity at Iconic Island Retreat NANTUCKET, June 2008 ˆ Nantucket‚s The Veranda House has opened its doors for the 2008 season with the unveiling of the final stage of an extensive expansion and renovation project intended to seamlessly mesh modern design with the rich history of the hotel and island. The architectural and design enhancements bring two new accommodations, a guest lounge and dining room, and expansive gardens to this 1684 dwelling. Boston-based interior designer, Rachel Reider, ASID, has played a key role in helping this 17th century structure accommodate the discerning demands of today's travelers yet retain details unique to its Pilgrim birth date. Leveraging the shift in New England design towards a more modern aesthetic, Reider worked closely with the hotel‚s owners to strike a balance between respecting the property's historical integrity, the Nantucket environment and a clean, fresh feel. Through her detailed work, Reider integrated historical features, including the original wide plank floors and the spindle and gingerbread verandas while adding new elements such as sea grass rugs, sheer window treatments, rustic wood side tables and glass droplet chandeliers that call the ocean to mind. The result is an elegant and airy interior that combines the natural beauty of Nantucket with casual elegance. The Veranda House now features 18 accommodations; a new breakfast room seating 16 that segues onto a newly constructed patio seating 20; and a plush new lounge where over a dozen guests can mingle before a fireplace while enjoying afternoon tea or evening champagne. Additionally, new and lavishly landscaped gardens accessed from wrap-around porches have been added. Here on Wednesday and Saturday evenings guests can mingle at a hosted wine and cheese reception. Reider (www.rachelreider.com) was recently featured in Better Homes & Gardens for her fresh and sophisticated approach to design. Her portfolio includes projects ranging from a modern Boston factory loft conversion to a Maryland beach house to a Montana ranch. She has developed an extensive knowledge of the interior design field through her time at the New England School of Art and Design followed by positions at renowned Boston home furnishings boutique Koo de Kir and prestigious design firm Jennifer Palumbo Inc. She keeps her ideas innovative by traveling regularly around the world and attending key trade shows to ensure that clients have access to the latest products and up-to-date designs. Nightly rates at The Veranda House (2 and 4 night minimum) for high season are from $289 up to $589. Included are accommodations, afternoon tea and a sumptuous continental breakfast of fresh seasonal fruits, home-baked pastries, fresh juices, Seattle‚s Best Coffee and organic teas. Guests can also take advantage of the exclusive "Beach Concierge" service to and from one of Nantucket's best beaches complete with beach umbrella, beach chairs and towels (gourmet lunches and transportation can also be arranged for a nominal fee). Lulled by sea breezes, guests may find it difficult to rouse themselves from Frette- and- duvet draped feather beds outfitted with a selection of decadent pillows. Extra special touches in each room include hand-blown Simon Pearce lamps, Italian tile rain showers and a vase of fresh flowers. An additional amenity that is complimentary to all guests is WiFi throughout the hotel, as well as in-room data ports. On the last night of a stay the turndown amenity includes shiny pennies placed on the pillow for guests to make a wish on when rounding Brandt Point while departing Nantucket by ferry, a longtime Nantucket ritual. The Veranda House is perched atop Step Lane, one of the island‚s highest points. The hotel was named for its three wrap-around balconies which offer unsurpassed views of Nantucket Harbor. The hotel‚s central location makes it easy for guests to explore the town‚s numerous art galleries, world-class dining venues and shops. The Nantucket experience in today's fast-paced world is right up there amongst the world-class travel icons. Nearly 40 percent of the island, formerly a whaling capital, is under conservation to preserve its wild moors and sandy beaches. The harbor front where Veranda House is located is a National Historic District replete with cobblestone and brick and old-fashioned street lamps.
