For many people, “North Conway” is synonymous with “outlet shopping.” Both residents looking for utilitarian items and confirmed shopaholics wanting one-of-a-kind designer items flock to North Conway for the best deals. In 1984 Stanley Tanger, one of the country’s foremost outlet developers, opened a Polo Ralph Lauren Outlet Store in North Conway. In 1988 L.L. Bean opened its very first outlet store in North Conway, and soon outlets began to line Route 16 in North Conway, giving the mile or so length of this main road the nickname “outlet strip.” Robert M. Barsamian of Settlers’ Green Outlet Village Plus started his North Conway retail development career with the acquisition of the old White Mountain airport. Settlers’ Green has grown from an initial 20 or so brand name outlets to 60 factory outlet retailers housed in a village style complex that includes Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, J. Jill and Aeropostale, the 200-room North Conway Grand Hotel, and a sprinkling of residential condominiums. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Settlers’ Green tenaciously added new buildings and more outlets moved into existing strip malls or freestanding buildings along “the outlet strip” of Route 16. The newest shopping destination opened in fall of 2006 when Barsamian and his company opened the first phase of an 84,000 square foot community shopping center, Settler’s Crossing, on the former Yield House site. The Mount Washington Valley now beckons those in search of tax-free shopping with more than 200 outlets, shops, boutiques, antique and craft stores. The Mount Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce hosts successful shopping promotions twice a year: Harvest to Holidays in the fall and Bud to Blossom in the spring. www.mtwashingtonvalley.org/shopping | |
