The Mount Washington Weather Observatory Offers Programs for All Ages The Mount Washington Weather Observatory welcomes casual visitors daily and offers in-depth opportunities: Mt. Washington Observatory’s Weather Discovery Center, located in the heart of North Conway, gives hands-on information about weather, how weather systems are formed and interpreted, and weather’s impact on human activity. Recommended for 5 years and up; your exploration will take about an hour. Free Open mid-March to late October, daily after Memorial Day. 603.356.2137, www.mountwashington.org/education/center Winter Edutrips’ participants brag they have “weathered” the worst weather in the world. The adventure begins aboard the 8-mile Snow Tractor climb to the summit of Mt. Washington. You may be greeted by a glistening panorama of white-topped peaks, some as many as 130 miles away, or you may be introduced to the wintry Mt. Washington by 100 foot visibility, temperatures of 4˚ Fahrenheit and average winds of 50 m.p.h. or you may experience both weather extremes within minutes. While atop the Northeast’s highest peak, you will take classes in meteorology, mountain photography or the glacial geology of the White Mountains. Stay overnight and take the Snow Tractor down the next day. By reservation only. Adults and teens, 14-18, accompanied by parent or legal guardian. Special trips for educators available. 603.356.2137, www.mountwashington.org/education/edutrips Mt. Washington Observatory Internships offer 5-8 month opportunities for qualified individuals to live and work beside Observatory scientists and staff. Duties include scientific research, tour-guiding, cooking, basic housekeeping and light maintenance in 8-day shifts. 603.356.2137, www.mountwashington.org/about/jobs/intern.php |
