Designing A Genial and Gracious Kitchen

Tucked in on blustery days, we find winter is the time to dream and plan.

We asked Sherri Cook of Cook & Cook Exquisite Custom Cabinetry in Scarborough, Maine to share with us the “recipe” for making the kitchen the genial and gracious center of any home.
“First off,” she advises, “take the time to research and explore cabinetry and appliances.  Winter is the perfect time to sift through magazines, books and articles, collecting inspiring photos of cabinet style, design details and appliance models that excite your interest and capture the “feel” that speaks to you.  As your collection grows, it is likely that you will begin to see a common theme in your choices.

“Once you have a sense of what is important to you, a skillful and experienced kitchen designer can take your vision and lay out a kitchen that makes optimal use of the space, ensuring that it functions correctly, is sensitive to the style and look of your home, as well as how you live in it, and results in a total design far greater than the sum of its parts.”
Cook & Cook Cabinetry creates kitchens that are harmonious with their environment. Sherri explains, “In this kitchen, Jeanne Rapone, CKD (Certified Kitchen Designer), and the cabinetmakers considered the woods outside the house and the owners’ collection of tiger maple pieces within and made the natural selection: tiger maple, custom-stained and finished, for the cabinets.  The ample windows and abundant natural light support the dark wood beauty of the tiger maple cabinetry, while the beaded inset style and raised panel doors convey the traditional detailing of the rest of the house.

Color the Center Island
“The color and specie of lighter wood flooring complements the cabinetry, rather than competing with it or trying to match it,” Sherri points out. “The choice of a granite counter and island top with a lighter background and a polished surface further reflects light and keeps the kitchen from feeling “heavy,” and the white farm sink beneath the arched window provides a nice break centered on a long cabinet run.  At the far end of the room, the painted interior in the open display cabinet does its part, keeping that corner from becoming too dark and helping to tie the cabinetry to the rest of the room.”
In our next issue Sherri will guide us through the cabinet selection process, looking beyond surface beauty, providing a primer on joinery, hardware and finishes and their importance to looks and function over time.
