In a world where production and prices of fossil fuels are tenuous and concerns about global warming increasing, many are looking for clean energy alternatives.  All six New England states offer resources based on RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates), or “green tags,” and Connecticut leads the way by implementing EECs (Energy Efficient Credits), or “white tags,” in 2007.  Find out about what’s available for your home or business:

Vermont:

Green tags are purchased as a surcharge to your energy bill and are used to help offset costs associated with renewable energy sources and help cut back on the power required from traditional fossil-fired plants.  The surcharge is measured through meter readings.

White tags are created through actual reductions in energy usage that are measured through software and control techniques.
Remember, too, that the IRS is offering incentives for becoming more green.  Go to
www.energy.gov/taxbreaks.htm to find information about federal tax breaks.  Each state also offers its own incentives.  www.dsireusa.org gives a rundown on what states and some localities are offering.
