Beautiful Heirloom
Ideas from “Captain” Barnes

Every year during Rockland, Maine’s Festival of Lights, the Historic Inns of Rockland throw open their doors for house tours featuring workshops with the innkeepers.  Ken Barnes of the Captain Lindsey House has earned renown for his imaginative gift-wrapping ideas.  He offers these ideas where the wrapping is an extension of the gift.

Wrap heirloom jewelry found on your trips to antique stores or church fairs with Victorian-style wallpaper from store remnants.  Tie a deep-colored velvet bow or tassels around the gift for a rich look.  Better yet, create your own jewelry, hair barrettes, or bookmarks out of beads or beaded ribbon collected throughout the year.

For your favorite cook, wrap cookbooks or kitchen items in pages from old cookbooks or the newspaper food section.  Attach a small set of measuring cups or spoons with the tag.  For the hiker in the family, tie a small compass or water bottle to any gift.

Pick up bunches of dried or silk flowers at your local craft or floral shop.  “Plant” them in a terra-cotta pot filled with packages of seeds, potting soil and wrap with ribbon.  Accessorize with flower ornaments.

Dress wine bottles in doll clothes, creating a personality for that bottle of wine you bring to the holiday party.

For the nature-lover, wrap your present in florist’s paper, then tie on pine cones and berries found in local fields, or create a small decorated natural grapevine wreath.

Save newlyweds’ newspaper wedding announcements to wrap their gifts.  Embellish with small, framed photos taken at the wedding.
