Hammond’s Pork Art

Why pigs?  Duane Hammond, resident of Alton, NH, finds himself answering that question often these days, since he’s made a name for himself as an artist who paints pigs.  The answer to the question comes easily.  “They make you laugh,” he says.

Several years ago, when Hammond was completing work on a seascape, he had a moment of “deswine inspiration,” as he calls it, when he painted a pig looking back at him.  Hammond published Pigs in a Poke, his first collection of pig-themed paintings, in 2006.  A second collection is due out this year.
Hammond’s pig-drawing career is a second life for him.  In 2002 he closed the door of his graphic design business after 40 years in that line of work.  Painting had been his first love, something he picked up from his grandfather.  There’s a lot of chuckling heard when Hammond’s art is viewed, but don’t be mistaken, they aren’t cartoons to Hammond’s eye.  “My great goal in life is to make people laugh.  Rarely do you see art that is humorous.”  Hammond’s pig paintings allow him to combine his love of painting with his love of making people laugh, and that’s nothing to snort at.  www.pigsinapoke.com
