Furniture masters INFUSE STYLE AND TRADITION by Chris Vivier David Lamb Fine Hand craftsmanship has always played a significant role in New England tradition, as seen in the architecture, wooden boats and furniture which survive today as testaments to their makers and times. However, in a world that is becoming more technological every day, the tools, trades and individuals that carry on this craft tradition have slowly receded into the shadows, bypassed by modern methods and ideas. Even in New England, once a bastion of American tradition and heritage, fine craftsmanship has become increasingly difficult to find. |

In the seaside town of Belfast, ME, faces appear out of the water as the tide recedes, only to disappear when the tide comes back in. The faces are wooden sculptures, carved into posts that rise out of the water at low tide. This grouping of sculptures is known as The Long Breath, and is the creation of Maine artist Ron Cowan. |

Renown Jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves & Trio played Great Waters Music Festival last night in Wolfeboro, NH–touching the audience with a glowing spirit. Being a performer myself I look at the arts with a kindred eye. What I saw in Dianne was a gift that goes far beyond talent. Dianne invoked the spirit of the music appreciating and connecting with the accompanists with pure joy. Basest Reuben Rogers also possessed this gift giving the performance an uplifting sensibility.
With Dianne's touring schedule, it is impressive that she is able to create a new and fresh experience in each performance. She referred to the stage as their "sand box" and anyone is welcome to play. I said to Dianne after the show that I was so tempted to go up and sing with her because I was so inspired, and she said "that would have been great." I just might have to take you up on that Dianne. If you love jazz, this is a band not to miss when they come to town. –Alana Harold, Editor-in-Chief TRIO: Geoffrey Keezer, Reuben Rogers, Gregory Hutchinson For more information about Dianne you can view her website at: www.diannereeves.com |
